Blood Test
Bone & Minerals
About this test
Bone & Minerals Tests are a group of blood tests used to evaluate bone health, calcium and phosphorus balance, vitamin D status, and the function of hormones involved in bone metabolism. They can help investigate conditions such as vitamin D deficiency, abnormal calcium levels, osteoporosis-related problems, and certain disorders of the parathyroid glands and kidneys. Calcium - Measures the level of calcium in the blood, which is essential for healthy bones, muscles, nerves, and normal heart function. Phosphorus / Phosphate - Measures blood phosphate, an important mineral for bones, teeth, energy production, and cellular function. Magnesium - Measures magnesium, which supports bone health, muscle function, nerves, and many enzyme reactions. Vitamin D (25-OH Vitamin D) - Measures the body's main circulating form of vitamin D and is commonly used to assess vitamin D status. PTH (Parathyroid Hormone) - Measures a hormone that regulates calcium and phosphorus levels and plays an important role in bone metabolism. Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) - An enzyme associated with bone and liver tissues. The bone-related component can provide information about bone formation and turnover. Ionized Calcium - Measures the biologically active form of calcium in the blood and may be useful when total calcium does not provide enough information. Bone-specific ALP
Preparation
Usually, fasting is not required for most bone and mineral blood tests. However, some laboratories may recommend fasting for particular combinations of tests or for specific tests such as certain calcium/PTH evaluations.
